Seminar and MComm (AppFin) Information Session

Topic: What Does the Finance Theory Say About the Current Financial Meltdown

The recent and widely ongoing turbulence in the financial markets has been spectacular, but at least equally bitter – very bitter – and startling so far. The recent weeks have witnessed the totally unexpected burial of some of the historical giants of the finance world. Where the events are taking all of us is seemingly beyond our control, no matter where on earth we may be living and no matter what we may be doing. It seems we are under the siege of a financial tsunami with waves demonstrating unforgiving force upon us.

The earthquake that has caused this tsunami has its main roots in the divergence between the Main Street and the Wall Street. Simple as it may sound, but a leveraged (i.e., geared) homeowner’s decision to default on his / her mortgage payments is part of the beginning of this earthquake, leading to the tsunami stage eventually. So, our talk will begin with a simple theoretical, but completely realistic examination of the “put option” in mortgage contracts and their meaning.  We will then extend this argument to the “implicit put option” that the failing giant financial institutions have had and unfortunately likely to have taken advantage of at the expense of the taxpayers.

Topic: Integrating Business and Project Architecture

Projects are simply a way of generating income for many organisations. However, poor projects can lead to waste through cost and time overruns. On the other hand, good projects are delivered early and produce revenue, which can significantly offset their costs an improve return on investment.

Integrating the business and project architectures creates effective businesses and encourages optimisation of project delivery.

Seminar and Postgraduate Programmes Information Session

Topic: Managerial Judgment and the MBA

We all like to think of ourselves has having ‘good judgement’ in the way that the dictionary defines it as ‘discernment or good sense…the ability to form sound opinions and to make sensible decisions or reliable guesses.’ But what is this desirable attribute? Is it a function of our personality, our intelligence and our genetics or is it a complex skill that we can learn and develop in our jobs and lives? How do we know it when we see it and how do we measure it? Can a manager get things consistently wrong and yet still be considered a ‘good’ judge?
In a brief session Dr. Chris Smith will raise a few issues about the issue of managerial judgement under uncertainty and suggest ways of improving your own judgement.
