University of Adelaide - Singapore Campus

The University of Adelaide - Singapore Campus is a joint venture between two of the oldest and most respected institutions in the Asia Pacific region: the Ngee Ann Kongsi and The University of Adelaide. The vision of the partners is to provide a high quality educational facility in Singapore combining under-graduate and post-graduate academic programs with applied executive and professional development courses taught by experienced consultants and professionals.

Courses are taught at the completely renovated Teochew Building on Tank Road in the city centre. Dedicated facilities for students include multi-media equipped lecture rooms, a student computer network with Internet access, computer equipped syndicate rooms, a computer laboratory, a student lounge and private study rooms.

The University of Adelaide

One of Australia's oldest, the University of Adelaide is among Australia's premier universities. Established in 1874, it has over sixty years' involvement in the education of overseas students including numerous notable students from Singapore. The University, which has a strong emphasis on graduate programs, has identified internationalization as one of its core values and strategic objectives.

The University of Adelaide has produced some of Australia's and the world's greatest scientists, scholars and public figures. Such illustrious names as Lord Florey, Sir William Bragg, Sir Douglas Mawson, Dame Roma Mitchell and Sir Mark Oliphant have brought great honor to the institution. In addition, Singaporean public figures who are graduates of The University of Adelaide include the late Mr. Ong Teng Cheong (President of Singapore 1994-1999), Dr Tony Tan (Deputy Prime Minister) and Dr Cheong Choong Kong (Deputy Chairman & CEO of Singapore Airlines).

The Australian Government has undertaken three quality audits of the 36 government funded universities through its Committee for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. These audits have placed Adelaide University in the top six Australian Universities and in the top four for research and teaching.

The Ngee Ann Kongsi

The Ngee Ann Kongsi is a foundation which is actively involved in educational, cultural and welfare activities. Founded in 1845 by Chinese immigrants of the Teochew dialect group, the Ngee Ann Kongsi was formally incorporated in Singapore under the Ordinance Act in 1933. The Kongsi has grown from a community bound by a common heritage and genuine concern for the welfare of its members to a foundation that now serves the community regardless of race, religion or social status.

The Kongsi has played a significant role in education in Singapore. In 1940 it established a primary school formerly known as Ngee Ann Girl's School, which was subsequently renamed Ngee Ann Primary School; in 1953 it assumed the management of Tuan Mong High School which was renamed Ngee Ann Secondary School; and in 1963 it established a technical college which is now known as the Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

The Ngee Ann Kongsi awards scholarships and bursaries to talented and deserving students in its schools and local tertiary institutions, of approximately S$400,000 each year.

In 1993, Ngee Ann City, a shopping and office complex along Orchard Road in Singapore, was completed. The returns from this property enable the Ngee Ann Kongsi, through its subsidiary Ngee Ann Development Pte Ltd., to continue contributing to the welfare needs of the elderly and the less privileged. Furthermore, the Kongsi contributes generously to the development of the arts and culture in Singapore
